Study in Ukraine

Ukraine was India's most popular low-cost European MBBS destination before February 2022. Following the onset of conflict, most Indian students (evacuated via Operation Ganga) have transferred to other countries. VedKris Edu currently does not recommend Ukraine for new admissions. We help former Ukraine students with transfer to Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Philippines.

Overview

Study in Ukraine — Current Status for Indian Students (2026-27)

Important Notice: Ukraine has been in an active conflict zone since February 24, 2022. The Indian government does not advise Indian citizens to travel to Ukraine at this time. VedKris Edu does not place new students in Ukraine while the security situation remains unresolved. This page provides context for families researching Ukraine MBBS and guidance for students who were enrolled in Ukraine before 2022 and need transfer support.

Ukraine's Legacy as India's Top Budget European MBBS Destination

Before 2022, Ukraine was the most popular European MBBS destination for Indian students — with more than 18,000 Indian medical students enrolled across universities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Odessa, Dnipro, and other cities. Ukraine offered:

  • 20+ NMC/WHO approved medical universities
  • Total 6-year MBBS cost: ₹20–32 Lakhs (among the cheapest in Europe)
  • English-medium instruction
  • European-standard medical education
  • WHO-recognised degrees valid for USMLE, PLAB, and NExT/FMGE
  • Cities like Kyiv, Lviv, and Dnipro with large Indian student communities

Ukraine's combination of cost, European accreditation, and English-medium teaching made it an almost perfect destination for budget-conscious Indian students who wanted European-quality MBBS. Bogomolets National Medical University (Kyiv), Bukovinian State Medical University, Kharkiv National Medical University, and Zaporizhzhia State Medical University were among the most popular institutions for Indian students.

Operation Ganga: India's Largest Student Evacuation

When armed conflict began in February 2022, the Indian government launched Operation Ganga — one of India's largest peacetime evacuation operations. Over 22,000 Indian citizens (including 18,000+ medical students) were airlifted from Ukraine via neighbouring Poland, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, and Slovakia in just 10 days. The operation was a logistical landmark, but left thousands of Indian students mid-course, needing to continue their MBBS in other countries.

Transfer Options for Former Ukraine Medical Students

VedKris Edu has assisted hundreds of former Ukraine MBBS students in transferring their credits to equivalent programmes in other countries. NMC India issued guidelines in 2022 for credit transfer from Ukrainian universities to approved institutions. Transfer options depend on the year of study completed and the receiving country's credit recognition policies:

Transfer DestinationYear of Ukraine MBBS Suitable ForApproximate Transfer Cost
RussiaYear 2–5₹12–22 Lakhs remaining fees
GeorgiaYear 2–4₹15–25 Lakhs remaining fees
KazakhstanYear 2–4₹10–20 Lakhs remaining fees
ArmeniaYear 2–4₹12–20 Lakhs remaining fees
PhilippinesYear 1–2₹15–22 Lakhs remaining fees

Contact VedKris Edu with your Ukraine university documents, year of study, and marksheets — we will evaluate your specific transfer options and help you continue your MBBS without repeating completed academic years wherever possible.

When Will Ukraine Reopen for Indian Students?

The security situation in Ukraine remains unpredictable as of mid-2026-27. Some Ukrainian universities have attempted to continue education online or through partner institutions in Europe for current students. However, NMC India has not updated its Ukraine university approval status, and clinical training in conflict-affected hospitals raises serious safety and quality concerns.

VedKris Edu monitors developments and will update our Ukraine placement policy when the Indian government reinstates travel advisory clearance and NMC India officially re-confirms Ukrainian university recognition status. Until then, we do not recommend new MBBS admissions in Ukraine.

Alternatives to Ukraine MBBS with Similar Cost and Quality

The closest alternatives to Ukraine's pre-2022 value proposition (low cost, European accreditation, English-medium, NMC-approved) are:

  • Russia — 25+ NMC approved universities, largest track record for Indian MBBS. ₹33–45 Lakhs total.
  • Kazakhstan — Most affordable NMC-listed option with cultural familiarity. ₹22–33 Lakhs total.
  • Armenia — European-standard, Caucasus location, e-Visa for Indians. ₹29–44 Lakhs total.
  • Poland — EU member state, full European accreditation. Higher cost but EU membership advantage. ₹45–65 Lakhs total.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ukraine MBBS

Can Indian students still enrol for MBBS in Ukraine in 2026-27?

VedKris Edu does not recommend or facilitate new MBBS admissions in Ukraine while the security situation remains active. We strongly advise students to choose one of the alternative destinations listed above.

Is my Ukraine MBBS degree still valid in India?

Ukrainian medical degrees from NMC India-listed universities remain valid for NExT eligibility, provided you complete the full programme requirements and clinical internship. For students who transferred mid-course, NMC India issued guidelines for credit recognition — final validation depends on completion of the programme at the transfer institution and NMC verification at the time of NExT application.
